Is Humid Weather Dangerous?

Humid Weather Sports Safety

Did you know that humidity can sometimes be even more dangerous than dry heat? On National Stay Cool Day, we’re shining a light on youth sports safety and the crucial steps needed to prevent exertional heat stroke (EHS).

When young athletes hit the field, their bodies are working overtime to regulate temperature. Keeping them safe isn’t just about handing them a water bottle—it’s about understanding the “Golden Hour” of heatstroke and acclimating to the environment slowly.

Here are three golden rules for coaches and parents:

1️⃣ Gradual Acclimation: Never rush into intense, back-to-back practices. Let the body adapt to the heat over 7–14 days.

2️⃣ Hydration Equation: Drink fluids before thirst sets in. Water and electrolyte-replacing drinks are your best friends.

3️⃣ Active Monitoring: Keep an eye out for early warning signs like heavy sweating, muscle cramps, and dizziness.

Let’s work together to keep the game fun, competitive, and—above all—safe. 💧👟
